Tennant Scoops Best Actor Prize!

David Tennant, the Scottish star of Doctor Who, last night scooped the Most Popular Actor prize at Britain's television "Oscars".
Tennant, 32, helped the sci-fi programme to a hat-trick at the National Television Awards. Co-star Billie Piper won Most Popular Actress and the show was also named Most Popular Drama.
A shocked Tennant said: "If my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the Doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru."
He was presented with this award by screen and stage legend Dame Julie Andrews. Tennant, who grew up in Ralston, Renfrewshire, added: "Whatever else happens in my life, I just met Julie Andrews."
The win proves Doctor Who has not lost its magic touch - last year it picked up the same three awards: for Piper, Most Popular Drama and Most Popular Actor for Christopher Eccleston, the drama's former Doctor.
Last night's other winners included motoring show Top Gear for Most Popular Factual Programme. Noel Edmonds won his first NTA award for Channel 4's Deal Or No Deal.

Doctor Who Scores TV Award Hat Trick!
Doctor Who has scooped three prizes at the National Television Awards in a repeat of its success last year. The BBC sci-fi drama won most popular drama, most popular actress for Billie Piper and most popular actor for David Tennant, who plays the Time Lord. Top Gear, whose presenter Richard Hammond is recovering from an accident while filming, won the factual award. Noel Edmonds' comeback Channel 4 show Deal Or No Deal was best daytime show, although the star could not attend. The awards, voted for by the public, were presented at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald. The Duke of Edinburgh sent a video message of congratulations to the veteran presenter, Sir David Attenborough who was given a lifetime achievement award. Terri Irwin, the wife of the late conservationist Steve presented him with the award. Channel 4's Big Brother won the reality title for the third year running, beating Celebrity Big Brother, The Apprentice and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! Big Brother housemate Nikki Grahame won the new category of TV contender, beating the show's winner Pete Bennett.
The hat-trick of awards for Doctor Who was a sign the show has lost none of its popularity with David Tennant taking over the lead role. Tennant's predecessor, Christopher Eccleston, took the best actor award in 2005. Jeremy Clarkson. who collected Top Gear's award, said it would cheer up his co-presenter Richard Hammond, who is recuperating after a high-speed crash in September. "It will also cheer up the Top Gear team, who've had a pretty torrid time of it," he added.
EastEnders beat Coronation Street for the second year running for most popular serial drama. Little Britain won the comedy category for the third year, beating the Catherine Tate Show, Will and Grace and My Family. The show's star, David Walliams, took a special recognition award for his charity swim across the Channel. For the fifth year running, Ant and Dec were voted the most popular entertainment presenters. The pair could not be at the awards because they were filming the next series of I'm A Celebrity. They also won the quiz award for Ant and Dec's Game Show Marathon, beating Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? which has won for the past seven years.

Who Dunnit Again!

Doctor Who took top honours at last night's National Television Awards with both its stars winning gongs.
Billie Piper was named Best Actress for the second year running and Scots actor David Tennant, who replaced Christopher Eccleston as the Time Lord earlier this year, was named Best Actor.
David said: "It's nice to know that people are grateful for what I'm doing. It's a great honour. "I can't believe that I won and I can't believe that I was given the award by Julie Andrews. It was amazing."
The glitzy ceremony at London's Albert Hall also saw Noel Edmonds complete his TV comeback with his first award. The bearded star won Best Daytime Programme for his Channel 4 quiz Deal Or No Deal.
ITV's star presenters Ant and Dec were celebrating again, after they equalled Michael Barry-more's record of 10 awards.
The Geordie duo picked up two awards - for Most Popular Presenter and Best Entertainment Show for Game Show Marathon.
Barrymore himself made a brief appearance to hand over the Best TV Contender award to Big Brother's Nikki Grahame.
She won against Celebrity Big Brother winner Chantelle Houghton and her former boyfriend Pete Bennett.
Big Brother host Davina McCall was delighted the show picked up the Best Reality gong after her chat-show failure earlier this year.
She said: "I want to thank Endemol for letting me present Big Brother. "After my turkey earlier this year, it was great to come back to the golden goose."
EastEnders actor Charlie Clements, who arrived with fellow cast member Lacey Turner, took the gong for the Best Newcomer.
The BBC soap triumphed in the Best Serial Drama category. Glamour girl Jordan arrived at the ceremony sporting a new brunette hairdo.

Doctor Who Nets A Hat Trick!

Noel Edmonds crowned his astonishing small screen comeback last night by winning a gong at the telly Oscars.
Noel, 57, scooped Best Daytime Programme for his hit Channel 4 quiz Deal Or No Deal.
The star, axed by the BBC six years ago, was unable to be at the National Television Awards - but was said to be "absolutely delighted".
But the runaway success of the night was Dr Who - scooping a hat-trick of prizes for the second year running.
Stars David Tennant and Billie Piper won Most Popular Actor and Actress while the BBC show also won Most Popular Programme.
David said: "I love my job. I'm so chuffed others seem to love it too."
The biggest cheer of the night came as Top Gear, co-hosted by Richard Hammond, was unveiled as Most Popular Factual Programme.
Presenter Jeremy Clarkson dedicated the gong to Richard, who is recovering from the horror injuries he suffered in a near-fatal jet car crash.
Jeremy said: "Richard knows that we've won and he's absolutely thrilled. Now he's won he thinks he is Napoleon and can conquer all of Europe."
And he had a jokey message for Richard, saying: "I told you if one of us had a car accident we'd win this."
Nearly 150 of telly's biggest names turned out in the glad rags for the awards ceremony at London's Albert Hall - including a galaxy of soap stars.

Triple Treat For Doctor Who!

Doctor Who notched a second hat-trick of victories at the National Television Awards last night. The BBC's time travel drama won Most Popular Drama, Most Popular Actress for Billie Piper and Most Popular Actor for the show's central star David Tennant.
It equalled last year's performance when the drama series won the same three titles – but with Christopher Eccleston, the previous Dr Who, taking Most Popular Actor. After receiving his award from Julie Andrews, Tennant said: 'I think if my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru. I love my job. I'm so chuffed that others seem to love it too. Thank you for tuning in.' Doctor Who is celebrating a hat-trick after scooping three top TV awards for the second year running. The sci-fi show won most popular drama and its star David Tennant was named most popular actor at the National Television Awards.
Billie Piper, who played the Doctor's assistant Rose in the first two series', won the best actress prize. Motor show Top Gear, whose presenter Richard Hammond is recovering after a car crash, won best factual programme.

Steve Irwin's wife Terri presented a lifetime achievement award to Sir David Attenborough and said the wildlife expert had inspired Steve, who died in September, to understand more about animals. The BBC science fiction drama series Doctor Who won three awards last night including most popular drama. David Tennant, who won most popular actor for his role as the time-travelling Doctor - taking over from Christopher Eccleston, last year's winner - joked backstage: "Thank goodness I didn't let the side down, eh? That would have been a tragedy.

Bathgate born Doctor Who star David Tennant has been named Most Popular Actor in Britain's TV Oscars.
The popular BBC sci-fi show also scooped the Most Popular Drama award and Tennant's co-star Billie Piper won Most Popular Actress.
After receiving the prize at last night's National Television Awards, Tennant said: "I think if my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru. Doctor Who Joins Stylish Beauties At Award Ceremony

After several years sharing the Tardis with his loyal sidekick Rose, Doctor Who is no stranger to keeping glamorous company. And co-star Billie Piper wasn't the only shapely beauty on hand to congratulate David Tennant after he was named most popular actor at the National Television Awards.

"I'm really chuffed," confessed the Scottish star after picking up his gong. "It's been really daunting to come into something that was already such a huge success. I think if my eight-year-old self could see me winning a prize for playing the Doctor on the telly, he would need a stiff Irn-Bru!"
Billie also had plenty of reason to smile, as she managed to match David's achievement by taking home the prize for most popular actress, while the sci-fi series' producers were no doubt delighted at winning the most popular drama award.
Among the other big winners on the night were Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, who is still recovering from his recent accident, and Sir David Attenborough, who received a videotaped message of congratulations from the Duke of Edinburgh after winning the lifetime achievement award.
There were no official prizes for most stylish star, but if there had been Hollyoaks actress Roxanne McKee, who was sporting a sensual lacy design, would surely have been a frontrunner. Former Hear'Say singer Kym Marsh was likewise turning heads in a backless black number, while Casualty's Georgina Bouzova went for a striking metallic creation.
